Chefs from Northern Michigan’s celebrated restaurant, the Cooks’ House are in the running for a medal

The committee has spoken. On Wednesday, April 2, the James Beard Foundation announced its official finalists in the running for chef, restaurant, and bar categories across the U.S., and lo and behold — Michigan has exactly one nominee.

Despite having a handful of semifinalists across categories, metro Detroit was completely shut out of the awards, with the sole nomination in Michigan going to Traverse City chefs Jennifer Blakeslee and Eric Patterson of the Cooks’ House. Nominees in the Best Chef: Great Lakes are up against some stiff competition within the region including Thai Dang of HaiSous, chefs Chris Jung and Erling Wu-Bower of Maxwells Trading, and Oriole’s Noah Sandoval in Chicago.

The small number of nominees means Michigan chefs will have stiff competition to keep up its streak of taking home medals. After a long period of crowding out by its big city neighbor, Chicago, Detroit chefs have received some impressive awards in recent years. Hajime Sato of Sozai in Clawson took home the medal in the Best Chef: Great Lakes category for 2024 and Warda Bouguettaya, owner of Warda Pâtisserie, won Outstanding Pastry Chef in 2022.

Head over to Eater for the full list of finalists nationwide. Winners will be awarded at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards Ceremony on Monday, June 16, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. If anyone is wondering, Eater will be livestreaming the event.
