Call for Pitches: Eater Seeks Stories About Equity and Justice in Detroit’s Restaurant Industry #DetroitFood

Eater Detroit is pleased to partner with the Race and Justice Reporting Initiative/Detroit Equity Action Lab (DEAL), an initiative of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights at Wayne State University Law School, to support independent journalists of color to cover equity and justice issues in Detroit’s restaurant industry.

We’re interested in stories that go beyond the surface and disrupt common narratives — and especially interested in human interest stories that help us understand the current issues. We want stories that take the reader deep into the community and tell us things we don’t know.

We are interested in a wide array of stories, such as equitable wages and benefits, sexism and racism in the workplace, changing demographics, development, and labor and staffing issues.

We also are interested in profiles on chefs, food purveyors, restaurant workers and leaders, and individuals or groups solving social problems. We also want rich stories about movements, culture, and food.

Pitches can take the form of a written news or feature story, reported photo or written essay. All work must be factual and include original reporting.

Journalists will be offered competitive rates, resources, and mentorship. Our hope is to contribute to the cultivation of a strong stable of local journalists of color and revelatory reporting on an industry in flux.
