Trendy Waffle Cones Stuffed With Fried Chicken Make Their Way to Michigan #DetroitFood

Fried chicken in waffle cones, a trend that started several years ago on a food truck in the Poconos, has made its way to Michigan. Chick’nCone, a fast-growing franchise that serves just what it sounds like it, has a new store in Madison Heights.
Chicken and waffles as a meal combo has been around for decades, a perfect compromise between dinner and breakfast. Chick’nCone, however, is for those who can’t be bothered with a knife and fork, or even a plate. The hand-rolled waffle cone is perfect for those who want to grab and go or share their meal on Instagram.
Jonathan Almanzar, one of the co-founders of the national franchise, denied that the cone is “carnival food.”
“That’s everybody’s initial thought, but we just made comfort food portable,” he says.
Breaded chicken is tossed with a sauce of the customer’s choosing — ranch with a bit of spice (the most popular), chile-pepper-based peri peri, cinnamon-maple, buffalo blue, or barbecue — and loaded into a freshly made waffle cone. The dishless dish comes to about $8. Waffle Crunch Shakes, Chick’nTenders and a Chick’nSandwich also are on the menu.
The restaurant is at 361 W 14 Mile Rd., in Madison Heights.
Fat Daddy’s Hot Chicken & Waffles Is Expanding
Speaking of fried chicken and waffles, Fat Daddy’s Hot Chicken & Waffles, a restaurant in the downriver community of Riverview is expanding. And this chicken is on a plate.
True to its name, the restaurant menu is mostly fried chicken, including sandwiches and waffle combos. Heat levels range from none (country style) to mild, extra hot, and “too damn hot”. Among the signature Nashville hot sandwiches is the Fat Daddy, a massive boneless chicken thigh on a brioche bun with house-made coleslaw, comeback sauce, and pickles. It’s $11 with fries. The Mac Daddy sandwich is topped with a five-cheese mac and cheese.
Owner Jim Brandon opened the first location in Riverview along Fort Street in December 2019. He’s planning the first of three new Fat Daddy’s restaurants soon in Redford (9363 Telegraph) with a second one to open at MGM Grand Detroit casino later in the year. Also in the works: an Ann Arbor location in the YOUnion student housing building at 411 E. Washington.
