Ann Arbor’s Best Restaurants #DetroitFood
Home to the prestigious University of Michigan, Ann Arbor draws students and educators from all over the world. Every weekend its downtown sidewalks are dotted with visiting family members, and thousands more visitors pour into “A2” for summer festivals and raucous college football Saturdays. One constant is Ann Arbor’s community of proudly self-described “townies,” many of whom are more passionate about the university’s sports teams than the ever-revolving student population.
Not surprisingly, Ann Arbor’s diverse and cyclical nature influences its food scene. A decades-old pub known for its hearty burgers and chili might share sidewalk space with a swanky eatery that constructs its yellowtail crudo using tweezers and microgreens. A bakery might arrange its mung bean paste buns in the same case as its pistachio cannoli and chocolate chip cookies. And there are plenty of places to grab a local beer and watch some sports — unless slipping into a sleek dinner club for world-class live jazz and elevated cocktails is the evening’s goal.
All this variety makes it challenging to narrow down Ann Arbor’s best 13 restaurants, but choices had to be made. What follows are restaurants that consistently serve up quality food and are loved by locals and visitors alike. For newer additions to the dining scene check out the Ann Arbor Heatmap.
New to the map: In this update, we’re swapping out Aventura for its sister restaurant, Sava’s, which brings fresh new takes to the menu. We’re also bidding adieu to Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burger and York Food and Drink, making room for two Main Street favorites: the enduring Black Pearl and the dazzling newcomer, Echelon.
