Where to Dine and Drink in Bustling Ferndale #DetroitFood

From smash-hit sandwich shops, buzzy breweries, and bagel icons are just the tip of the iceberg

Ferndale, just north of Detroit, is a city with an active, eclectic spirit — and a food and beverage scene that’s rapidly growing. Once home to agricultural businesses, dive bars (Tony’s Sports Bar, Elk’s Club, and New Way — some of the city’s first establishments to receive liquor licenses), and small-town diners, it has evolved into a hotspot for diverse and flavorful food and drink. There’s even more coming into the city, with exciting newcomers such as Grey Ghost, which is reimagining a former office space on Woodward into a trendy burger joint. Just next door, Oak Park is expanding its offerings with new spots like Forest Bakery, Hansen Hall, and Dog and Poney Show Brewing, joining mainstays like Ernie’s Market.

Ferndale also takes pride in its local craft breweries and cafes, which actively collaborate with the community by hosting events such as the Ferndale Library’s book club at Ferndale Project and the Detroit reading party at Catfé Lounge — a place where people can socialize with cats in hopes of finding them forever homes. While it’s difficult to pick the absolute best spots in Ferndale, the city’s small businesses are thriving, and the appreciation for these local gems deserves more recognition than can fit on a map.

New to this map: Just about everything.
