Where to find the most creative tube meat toppings and classic coneys, too

A favorite at backyard barbecues and ballparks, the hot dog is a symbol of gastronomic simplicity. While a sandwich at heart — meat between a bun — it often falls into its own category on restaurant menus.

In Detroit, franks are nearly synonymous with the classic coney dog, but plenty of restaurants have found ways to take sausages to the next level. Some of the region’s Mexican restaurants, for example, have taken to adding their takes on the Sonoran dog. Meanwhile, the creative pop-up operators behind Fried Chicken & Caviar frequently host their glizzy parties at Two Birds in Detroit’s West Village. Among the establishments exiting the hot dog map is Chili Mustard Onions, the all-vegan diner that boasted a rare offering for meat-free coneys, which closed permanently in October 2022.

On this list, no simple ketchup and mustard condiments will do. Here, now, are 10 bacon-wrapped, kimchi-topped, spicy pepper-bedecked hot dogs that are worth a special trip.
