There’s really never been a better time to be a coffee drinker in Detroit than now. The city is flooded with an abundance of great cafes roasting their own beans and community shops offering comfortable atmospheres with excellent local roasts. A decade ago, Detroiters considered themselves lucky if a national chain option came to town. Today, we have options, from cafes like Sepia Coffee, which specializes in highlighting the work of Black and brown coffee farmers, or innovative pop-ups like Cafecito Alvarez, owned by sisters from southwest Detroit who inspire nostalgia with their roving line of Mexican-influenced espresso drinks. Then, there’s the outsized influence of Arab-owned coffee shops in neighboring Dearborn.

With an ever-increasing array of spots to fuel up on caffeine — be it a latte or a cup of tea — it’s sometimes hard to choose the best places. Exiting the coffee shop map are Haraz Coffee’s Midtown location, which shuttered, and Cairo Coffee, the counter service cafe situated within Spot Lite, which is closed temporarily. Meanwhile, Morningside Cafe on the city’s east side has made its debut. Below, find a guide to some of Detroit's finest cafes to get cozy below Eight Mile.
