A chili cook-off and farewell party are planned later this month

For nearly a decade, Detroit beer fans had a spacious haven for beers on tap, growler fills, hard-to-find selections, and an annual chili cook-off when 8 Degrees Plato flung open its doors in the city’s Cass Corridor. Those days are coming to an end on December 31 when the bottle shop and bar closes its doors for good.

In an Instagram post published on Monday, November 25, owners Brigid Beaubien and Tim Costello announced that the shop will shutter permanently by the end of the month. “After countless sleepless nights and anxious days, Brigid and myself have decided to retire from the beer store/beer bar business and close the Detroit location on December 31st, 2024. As rewarding as owning and operating the Detroit store is, it is now time to us to move on with our lives. There are still many things that Brigid and myself are looking to accomplish,” reads the announcement, in part.

The note went on to say that a purchase agreement for a new buyer had recently been in the works, but the deal fell through. Eater has reached out to the business and will provide further details if they become available.

The beer shop and bar welcomed its first visitors upon opening in September 2015, the first of several new additions within a building that once housed businesses in Detroit’s former Chinatown. Beaubien and Costello became interested in locating a space in Detroit to open a bottle shop back around 2010. The duo wound up opening a store in Ferndale around 2011, before landing on the 2,400-square-foot space on the Cass Corridor. Ahead of its Detroit opening, Beaubien told Eater that much of the spot would incorporate reclaimed materials and furniture. In 2018, Beaubien opened Urbānum, a home furnishings and decor shop, while the Ferndale location closed permanently at the end of December that year. Beaubien sold ownership of Urbānum to Susan Brice in 2023. Over the years, Plato expanded upon its offerings to include bottles of wine, a variety of food pop-ups, and its popular annual chili cook-off — in which members of the community are challenged to come up with chili recipes using a specific beer as a basis for inspiration that are judged by individuals involved in the food industry.

While it wasn’t immediately clear what the next chapter will look like for Beaubien and Costello, the pair are inviting fans to celebrate Plato’s legacy during events later this month. The spot’s final chili cook-off takes place on Sunday, December 8 and a farewell party will be held on Saturday, December 28.
