The sprawling restaurant was a go-to spot for downtown office workers and special occasions.

Maru Sushi & Grill, the massive restaurant situated in the Federal Building downtown, has closed its doors permanently after seven years of service. According to the Freep, a sign posted on the eatery’s door said the last day of business was Sunday.

The location is part of an Okemos-based chain with outposts spread across several cities in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, including Grand Rapids, East Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Midland. The downtown Detroit location flung open its doors in 2016 as the sixth location at the time for the chain.

According to the Detroit News, whose newsroom is also housed within the Federal Building, a statement posted in front of the establishment read: “We want to say from the bottom of our hearts: thank you. Thank you for every meal you’ve spent with us, for every reunion, birthday or anniversary you’ve celebrated with us. For every positive review, to-go order, photo and kind word we’ve received from you for the past [seven and a half] years.”

When Maru first opened, the spot was initially noted for its sprawling 4,400-square-foot interior, which boasted seating for 145 and a spacious outdoor patio — an ideal space for accommodating office workers, happy hour, and large groups for special occasions. Its sushi offerings also featured a range of options from rolls and hibachi grills, to small plates like fire cracker shrimp and ceviche.

The News goes on to report that a new Maru location is slated for 2025 in Brighton. A message on the restaurant’s website confirms the forthcoming opening and noted that the closure took effect Sunday, September 1.
