Maru Sushi closes downtown, a coffee shop switch in Milwaukee Junction, Bobcat Bonnie’s shutters its Partridge Creek location, and more.

As we welcome the fall season, a number of food and drink establishments in metro Detroit have said farewell to diners — including several that belong to chain restaurant groups. Among the recent shutters in and around town, a Milwaukee Junction coffee shop that will soon see new life under a different name, a downtown sushi destination, a Macomb County location for a regional chain restaurant, and a longtime Dearborn deli. Here are six closures to know about now in metro Detroit.

The Shutter, a regular roundup of Detroit and metro Detroit’s restaurant closures, is your resource to find out what’s on its way out. The list is by no means comprehensive. Have information on another closing? Send all tips to detroit@eater.com.

August 2024

DEARBORN — Noah’s Deli (14500 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn), a longtime deli known for corned beef, pastrami, and other sandwiches, has closed after nearly 50 years in service. However, a September 6 Facebook post suggests that Noah’s will reopen in the coming months under new ownership. Details about what to expect were scarce, although a September 16 post indicates that the new operator will make the space his own, while a comment within the thread published by the deli noted that the new place will serve chicken sandwiches.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Bobcat Bonnie’s, Partridge Creek (17330 Hall Rd Space 195, Clinton Township), has closed permanently, following more than four years in service. The business announced the shutter in August. Previously, the location — set within the Mall at Partridge Creek — had been a Max and Erma’s location until the end of 2019, according to Crain’s Detroit.

ROYAL OAK — City Ramen (321 S Main St, Royal Oak), an Oakland County destination for noodles, announced its closure in an August 26 Facebook post. No reason for the shutter was listed.

September 2024

DOWNTOWN — Maru Sushi (160 W Fort St, Detroit), the downtown destination for sushi and large gatherings that was part of a Michigan-based chain, shuttered its location on the ground level of the Federal Building, at the beginning of September after seven years of service.

MILWAUKEE JUNCTION — The Gathering Coffee Co. (2831 East Grand Boulevard, Detroit), a coffee shop and community arts space, closed on September 8, but not without good news for coffee fans. Beginning October 1, Sepia Coffee Project will take its place. The Gathering Coffee Co. launched in August 2020, after founder Emily Steffen first began renting out the location as a “makeshift coffee bar, cool brew bar, pour-over station.” This will be Sepia’s first retail location as founder Martell Mason continues raising funds to launch the company’s roastery and tasting room in his hometown of Highland Park.

WOODHAVEN — Black Rock Bar and Grill (22753 Allen Rd, Woodhaven), another chain restaurant, has closed its Woodhaven location. The Michigan-based chain specializes in steaks served on a 755-degree volcanic rock that allows visitors to cook meat to their temperature preferences.
