Downtown’s Paradise Valley district is welcoming its latest addition to the city’s dining scene this week with the opening of Fixins Soul Kitchen, a growing soul food restaurant chain founded by Kevin Johnson, a former NBA All-Star and mayor of Sacramento.

The new establishment at 1435 Randolph will host a grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, August 23 with Johnson, who will be joined by several local dignitaries and members of the business community, including Rev. Charles Christian Adams, Rainy Hamilton Jr. of Hamilton Anderson Associates, Detroit City Council Member Mary Sheffield, and others.

Johnson and his wife Michelle founded Fixins Soul Kitchen in 2019 in the Oak Park neighborhood of Sacramento in California, offering visitors an examination of the former All-Star’s love of Black culture and the soul food he grew up with. Menu items include classics, such as chicken and waffles, oxtails, shrimp and grits, and deep fried deviled eggs. The chain now also includes locations in Los Angeles and Tulsa.

The 8,400-square-foot space seats 325 and formerly housed Detroit Seafood Market, which in its heyday, was a hot spot for local political movers and shakers. The property is owned by Hamilton Anderson Associates.
