The Monroe Street Drive-In Theater Heads Back to Downtown in November #DetroitFood
The 62-vehicle pop-up drive-in theater includes movie concessions and nine outdoor seating pods
After finding success last winter with its pop-up drive-in movie theater and then transforming into an outdoor roller rink over the summer, real estate firm Bedrock and Emagine Entertainment are bringing back the Monroe Street Drive-In to downtown Detroit later this fall.
Kicking off Friday, November 12, and running through spring, the drive-in again occupies the Monroe Block project area — the site of Detroit’s first theater district. Tickets are $20 per vehicle, with showtimes every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings.
This season, the Monroe Street Drive-In features space for up to 62 vehicles and offers nine outdoor pods seating up to four people each. Concessions will be available on site from a “modular concessions pavilion” selling popcorn, snacks, coffee, hot cocoa, and other beverages. Artwork by Detroit artist Sheefy McFly will be displayed on the Campus Martius Park-facing side of the outdoor movie screen. McFly’s artwork spanned the entire floor of the outdoor roller rink over the summer.
While a movie roster has yet to be released, last year’s drive-in included family-friendly and classic films like Shrek, Back to the Future, and Jurassic Park displayed on a 60-foot screen set against the backdrop of downtown Detroit.
In addition to the Monroe Street Drive-In this fall, a holiday market in Cadillac Square should also open to the public the week of November 8.
Both the Monroe Street Drive-In and Monroe Street Midway roller rink are the latest projects from Bedrock under the Decked Out Detroit umbrella meant to support small businesses in Detroit and beyond during the ongoing pandemic.
