Olin Arrives in Downtown Detroit This Weekend With Mediterranean-Influenced Food #DetroitFood

Restaurateur Holly McClain’s solo project debuts with a sister walk-up window serving soft pretzels on Friday
Olin, an American-Mediterranean brasserie from restaurateur Holly McClain, is scheduled to open its doors in downtown Detroit on Friday, September 25, a rep for the restaurant confirms to Eater. The restaurant, located in the former PuppetArt Theater building at 25 E. Grand River Ave. near the Shinola Hotel will feature dine-in service and a sister walk-up window called Twist, opening next week for takeout soft pretzels, cocktails, and ice cream floats.
McClain is a Downriver native who attended culinary school in Chicago before going on to help open several respected restaurants including Spring and Green Zebra, per a release. She was part of the team that brought the Highlands to the Renaissance Center last winter, and is the wife of James Beard award-winning chef Shawn McClain. Holly McClain selected chef Andrew Shedden to handle the kitchen at Olin, preparing dishes like potato and artichoke bravas, wood-fired cauliflower “piccata,” and grilled octopus, and steak frites. The menu also teases selections of West Coast and East Coast oysters served two ways, wild mushroom pate, short rib burgers, and chocolate tahini tarts.
Twist, facing into Parker’s Alley, will feature soft pretzels in flavors like sesame-sea salt and olive as well as dessert versions like a butterscotch glazed. In addition to the dipping sauces for said pretzels, customers will also be able to take cocktails and ice cream floats with flavored seltzers to-go.
Olin was designed by McIntosh Poris Associates and features half-moon booths with tan upholstery and photo murals created by artist Lisa Spindler. The restaurant has 13 seats at the bar, 20 in the lounge, and 100 in the dining room with a chef’s table peeking into the open kitchen. No patio seating will be available until next year, a rep for the restaurant confirms to Eater.
Olin isn’t initially opening with carryout options beyond Twist, though the restaurant’s website notes that a takeout menu will be available soon. Walk-ins are accepted, but reservations are also being taken through Resy. Large parties should make reservations by phone. Diners can expect all of the standard safety protocols including temperature checks and masks for staff and those who aren’t seated.
Olin is located at 25 E. Grand River Ave. (Twist is located between Olin and the Shinola Hotel in Parker’s Alley); open 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday; brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; website.
