Detroit’s Restaurant Community Hosts a Fundraiser for an Apparatus Room Server #DetroitFood
Friends of Scott Dillon are planning a barbecue benefit at Detroit City Distillery to help with his medical bills
Members of the Apparatus Room are organizing a fundraiser this week to help support the medical costs and recovery of a server.
Scott Dillon, a part-time server at the Detroit Foundation Hotel restaurant, is currently in a hospital intensive care unit after suffering a severe brain bleed in early July. Prior to the pandemic, Dillon patched together a living through self-employed design work in addition to waiting tables at the Apparatus Room and renting out rooms in his home through Airbnb. However, COVID-19 closures and other economic impacts of the pandemic hurt his ability to earn money. While he has made progress at the hospital, family say that it’s likely Dillon will need some sort of long term rehab and care.
In addition to starting a Gofundme campaign to help with the medical bills, chef Thomas Lents and employees of the Apparatus Room are working with Detroit City Distillery to host a barbecue fundraiser in Dillon’s honor.
The event is scheduled to take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29 outside of Detroit City Distillery in Eastern Market. Tickets are $35 and includes food and a drink ticket as well as a donation to Dillon. The menu includes a choice of smoked brisket, smoked pork belly, or marinated and grilled mushrooms on Texas toast with poblano and tomatillo barbecue sauce. The menu also features tomato salad with chilled shrimp and avocado, apple-jalapeno-jicama slaw, grilled sweet corn with harissa fet, and chili-lime compressed watermelon. The event will follow all the required COVID-19 safety protocols for mask use, social distancing, sanitizing, and more.
