Frita Batidos brings new satellite food trailer to Cass Corridor

Cuban-influenced burger hotspot Frita Batidos took its shiny, new Airstream food trailer for a spin in Cass Corridor for the first time this week. Frita Air debuted at the Midtown Dog Park on Monday with a pared down menu featuring items like chorizo burgers, garlic cilantro fries, tropical milkshakes, and churros. The trailer is currently sitting out the snow storm, but is scheduled to make return visits Friday through Sunday.

Dine-and-dash turns out to be a misunderstanding

A misunderstanding regarding payment for a catering order at Amore da Roma led to a Team Wellness Center employee being shamed on the local news. Janice Jones tells the Detroit News she was sent to pick up a catering order from the Eastern Market restaurant on Monday with the understanding that it had been paid for over the phone. She was later contacted by friends and family when her face showed up in security footage identifying her as an alleged dine-and-dasher.

El Guapo truck shuts down

The El Guapo Grill food truck announced today that it is closing as it undergoes a change of ownership. “We can offer no further information at this time,” the truck operator wrote in a statement on Twitter. “Our sincerest thanks to our hardworking staff and loyal customers.”

Italian beef food truck fundraising for brick-and-mortar

The owners of five-year-old food truck Matt & Mo’s are aiming to open their own Italian beef sandwich restaurant in Hazel Park in April. The partners launched a $24,000 crowdfunding campaign this week to make the restaurant happen. Matt & Mo’s recently began hosting pop-ups at Doug’s Delight.

Co-working space and cafe to open in Eastern Market

The coworking space and cafe that brought a weird crane-operated lemonade stand to the Dequindre Cut last summer is opening inside its newly constructed building in Eastern Market. Bea’s is set to open on Thursday, February 27 with a part from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Food pantries pop up in outdoor benches

Sit On It Detroit is trying out a new strategy with its outdoor benches — making Little Free Libraries into food pantries. Users in the community can leave food donations in the cabinet and take items as-needed. It’s a strategy that first developed in Arkansas and has taken hold in other communities as a way to fight food insecurity and the stigma associated with visiting a food pantry.

New pub replaces Hamlin Corner in Royal Oak

A new bar and grill is set to fill the space left vacant by Hamlin Corner and Strada. The Daily Tribune reports that Rochester-based City Tavern is expanding to the space with a 242-seat restaurant.

Craft Work space goes up for sale

Just days after announcing its impending closure, the space home to Craft Work in West Village listed for sale at $300,000. The storefront at 8047 Agnes St. is located at the base of the Parkstone Apartments and the building owners hope to sell that square footage. The current space is leased for $4,000 per month. Craft Work closes permanently on Saturday, March 7.

The Bottom Line rebuilds

The Bottom Line, which closed abruptly last fall due to severe building damage from backed up sewage, is in the process of rebuilding. The cafe launched a GoFundMe in January to help with repair costs. The owners recently installed new drywall in the space.
