Coffee Down Under opens this spring

A new coffee bar is importing more Australian-style coffee culture to downtown Detroit this spring. Coffee Down Under, a bar featuring espresso roasts from Melbourne-based Proud Mary cafe, is currently under construction beneath Brome Modern Eatery in the Financial District.

Owner Tarun Kajeepeta previously operated the car subscription service Condor Detroit, but sold the business in 2018. Shortly after, he went to live abroad in Australia for a year, where he became interested in Melbourne’s renowned cafe culture. With help from friends in metro Detroit and Melbourne, Kajeepeta developed the idea for Coffee Down Under, a small espresso bar serving and popular Australian drinks like the flat white, the Melbourne Magic, and the long black.

Coffee Down Under will be locate down the stairs at the entrance to Brome Modern Eatery. The 400-square-foot space features a small kitchen area. Kajeepeta says the bar will be geared towards grab-and-go customers with fewer than 10 seats at the cafe. There will also be two to three food options available such as breakfast burritos and pastries as well as packaged items. The food will either be made on site or sourced from a local wholesale purveyor.

Just behind Coffee Down Under, Kajeepeta also has another project in the works, though the details are still being finalized.

Kajeepeta estimates that Coffee Down Under will open sometime in March or April. Stay tuned for updates as the project moves forward.
