NYC’s Mister Dips Moves Into Downtown Detroit With Burgers and Soft Serve #DetroitFood
The 30-seat restaurant from chef Andrew Carmellini opens this spring
The NoHo Hospitality complex is expanding in downtown Detroit with a new, permanent outpost of chef Andrew Carmellini’s burger trailer Mister Dips. The New York-based restaurant group confirms to Eater that it will be opening two outposts of the casual burger stand this year — one in Parker’s Alley at the Shinola Hotel and another at the South Street Seaport in Manhattan.
Mister Dips got its start out of a seasonal Airstream trailer in Williamsburg in 2016, drawing the praise of Eater NY’s then-editor Nick Solares who fondly described the slider-adjacent griddled burgers served on steamed potato buns as “Shake Shack on acid.” Mister Dips leans into the throwback 1970s aesthetics with a kitschy soft serve logo. The menu is simple with Single Dips (single patty-burgers) and Double Dips (a double patty) as well as an Impossible burger option and a Special Dip with bacon, pepper jack, and caramelized onions. There’s also waffle fries and soft serve ice cream that can be customized with psychedelic toppings and candy shells. A representative for NoHo says the menu for Detroit is still being finalized.
Mister Dips is NoHo’s fifth project within the Shinola Hotel. It’s other restaurants and bars include Penny Red’s, the Brakeman, San Morello, and Evening Bar. Moving into a 2,000-square-foot space next to Madcap Coffee, the burger stand will seat 30 people and is slated to debut this spring.
Of course, Detroit already has a whole lot of burger competition, particularly in the downtown area and a soft serve stand called Huddle is located just around the corner. Suffice to say, competition will likely be stiff for Mister Dips, but affordable options are always welcome in the increasingly spendy district.
