The carryout hotspot is getting a second outpost after years of anticipation

New Center is about to get an exciting new addition to its ranks this week. Following nearly two years of anticipation, the second outpost of northwest Detroit Caribbean restaurant the Jamaican Pot is poised to open its doors in the New Center One building at 3031 W Grand on Thursday, January 23.

Husband and wife team, chef Rose Forrest aka Mama Rose and Bruce Cunningham, established their first Detroit restaurant together on Eight Mile in 2014. The small takeout shop and Eater 38 member earned a loyal following for dishes like jerk chicken and curry goat prepared with halal meat. The pair settled on a second location in New Center at the urging of their customers and corporate clients who use the business’s catering services.

The new restaurant is tucked into one of the corners of the upper levels of New Center One. The menu is expected to be slightly different from the original location in order to accomodate faster service for patrons eating on their lunch hour.

Jamaican Pot joins a fast-growing contingent of restaurants in the New Center area including Yum Village and the Kitchen, by Cooking with Que. The neighborhood is also slated receive an African restaurant called Baobab Fare, a new project from the team behind Selden Standard, and an Italian restaurant from Supino’s owner Dave Mancini.
