Mel Farr had advanced concussion-related disease when he died, report saysStephanie Hernandez McGavin Automotive News - Mel Farr, a former Detroit Lions running back and owner of what was once the largest black-owned dealership group in the U.S., reportedly had Stage 3 chronic traumatic encephalopathy when he died in 2015 at age 70. Farr acquired a Ford dealership in Oak Park in 1975, and he eventually grew his automotive empire to a chain of 11 dealerships and 13 franchises (Ford, Toyota, Mazda, Suzuki, Volkswagen and Hyundai). The Mel Farr Automotive Group becamethe largest black-owned dealership in the nation.
