Downtown Detroit Nets a New Sushi Spot #DetroitFood

Maru Sushi swings open for lunch on Friday

The latest in a wave of new Detroit sushi destinations is quietly throwing open its doors today. The Detroit News reports that the highly anticipated outpost of Michigan-based Japanese chain Maru Sushi & Grill will debut today in downtown Detroit’s Federal Building.

Reached by Eater, general manager Thomas Rossana confirmed that the restaurant will open its doors today for lunch in what the chain is considering a soft opening. The 4,400-square-foot eatery, initially announced in June, was designed by Detroit-based firm Rossetti with architectural and decorative elements that recall nets and fins. The restaurant seats around 145 diners and features a specialty booth located inside a decommissioned revolving door. During warmer months, diners can also look forward to a 65-seat patio.

The Detroit location is headed by chefs Dan Solowy and Ben Wiley. The menu features Japanese fusion dishes including sushi, Japanese-style small plates, and a full bar. A full menu has yet to be posted, but the company’s website offers a taste of Maru’s signature dishes at its other restaurants.

According to the News, an “express lunch” menu will be available for workers in the downtown area from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily. The restaurant will offer a retail service, selling beer, wine, and sake and are also apparently experimenting with a new gratuity model that adds a 10-percent charge to bills that’s shared amongst front- and back-of-house staff.

Maru Sushi is located at 160 W Fort St. The restaurant will opens from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. It will open slightly later on weekends and stay open until around 11 p.m. in the evenings.
