Celebrate the Year of the Snake at these restaurants, cafes, and bakeries in metro Detroit

The Year of the Snake has arrived on Wednesday, January 29, meaning that many metro Detroiters are preparing to celebrate the Lunar New Year. And while it’s obviously never a bad time to visit some of the region’s beloved Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants, a few spots are also offering special celebrations. Among the many events that intersect the holiday spirit and food, are a pair of celebrations at the iconic Mon Jin Lau Restaurant in Troy, where two festivals are taking place. Those still looking for plans to celebrate can look at the many specials on offer around town to mark Lunar New Year 2025.


Mon Jin Lau (1515 E Maple Road, Troy) — Metro Detroit stalwart Mon Jin Lau is hosting two celebrations in honor of the Year of the Snake. While tickets are sold out for the destination’s multi-course dinner scheduled for Sunday, February 2, the spot’s weekly Shanghai Wednesdays mixer for young professionals will take place on Wednesday, January 29, and will feature specials on sushi, other food, and cocktails, live DJ sets, and a sampling of the Chinese Lion Dance.

Eastern Market Shed 5 (2810 Russell Street, Detroit) — The Association of Chinese Americans Lunar New Year event is a family-friendly affair featuring Chinese food, traditional crafts, cultural performances, and more. Festivities take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 2. inside Shed 5 at Eastern Market.

The Peterboro (420 Peterboro Street, Detroit) — This Cass Corridor spot will be in the festive spirit the first weekend of February, highlighted by a performance by the Detroit Lion Dance Association, which begins at 5 p.m., Saturday, February 1. Indulge in the spot’s Chinese American menu with specialties like cheeseburger spring rolls, fried chicken bao, and the Detroit staple — almond boneless chicken.

Detroit Shipping Company (474 Peterboro Street, Detroit) — A Lunar New Year Asian art pop-up will be held at this Cass Corridor food hall, featuring the work of artist Tony Lee and music by Dust. The event takes place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 29. While perusing the artwork, visitors can indulge in any number of the dishes available at Detroit Shipping Company, from Nepalese dumplings from Momo Cha, Thai street food from Bangkok 96, and New York City-style rice and pita platters from Halal Street.

The High Dive (11474 Joseph Campau Ave, Hamtramck) — The Detroit Asian Collective, made up of a community of young professional Asian Americans in metro Detroit, will host a Lunar New Year potluck at 5 p.m., Saturday, February 8, at the High Dive in Hamtramck.
