From vegan and gluten-free treats to alternative flavors, there’s something for everyone on Paczki Day

Paczki Day in metro Detroit has grown well beyond its Polish roots into a regional holiday for pastry obsessives to indulge on these filled and fried desserts. On Fat Tuesday, these bakeshops, driven by a passion for creativity, throw open their doors to cater to the doughnut-seeking hordes. The celebration of Paczki Day, which has become a cross-cultural event in metro Detroit, has naturally resulted in creative and unique variations of the traditional paczki fillings.

Small’s Bar adds flavored vodka to its paczki filling and serves it with a straw, whereas other local bakeries are making vegan and gluten-free options, and piping everything from cannoli cream to banana cream filled with chocolate glaze, salted peanuts, and a slice of candied bacon on top — and calling it a Fat Elvis. Place an order ahead of time or plan to arrive early and wait in line on Feb 13. These pastries won’t stick around for long. For traditional bakeries and flavors, check out the classic paczki guide.
