A Korean Mexican Fusion Spot Is Opening in Downtown Detroit #DetroitFood

Neuvo Seoul is headed to the Financial District on Shelby

The brothers who gave us Hanah Steakhouse last year in downtown’s Financial District are inviting Detroiters to get a taste of Korean Mexican cuisine with the opening next month of Nuevo Seoul. The fast-casual spot is supposed to open at 607 Shelby in early February, according to a release.

Customers can expect options like tacos and burritos filled with bulgogi beef or chicken, birria made with Korean beef short rib, kimchi fries loaded with al pastor tofu, and Korean fried chicken and wings. To drink, there will be cocktails spiked with aguas frescas and “Mexican-inspired spiked slushies.” The space next to Hanah Steakhouse seats 125 diners. A rendering of the place also shows an enclosed outdoor patio.

Korean Mexican food has origins dating back to at least the 1990s in Los Angeles, where Korean American and Latinx residents have co-existed for generations. In 2009, LA chef Roy Choi’s Kogi BBQ Korean tacos helped to define what has become a quintessentially American cuisine.

Brothers Chris and Peter Han opened Hanah Steakhouse in late 2022 to mixed reviews. The pair also operate the suburban mini-chain Osaka Steakhouse with locations in Clawson and Shelby Township. Peter Han told WDIV in December 2022 that the Hans set their sights on expanding into the city after noting that downtown was lacking in an Asian steakhouse.
