Workers at MGM Grand Casino Reject New Labor Contract #DetroitFood
Union members from Hollywood Casino at Greektown and MotorCity Casino voted Sunday in favor of ratifying the deal
Some 2,100 workers from Hollywood Casino at Greektown and MotorCity Casino will be returning to work after voting in favor of ratifying a new five-year contract agreement on Sunday, November 19, following 34 days of striking for increased wages and improved benefits. However, union members from MGM Grand Casino rejected the deal and will continue picketing.
According to the Detroit Casino Council — which represents 3,700 dealers, housekeepers, food and beverage employees, valets, engineers, and more at the city’s three casinos — union members from MGM Grand will continue bargain negotiations until an agreement has been reached. Members from each casino voted separately on whether to accept the proposed agreement, which includes an immediate $3 an hour bump in pay (average 18 percent wage increase in the first year) and $5 an hour total raises through the life of the contract. The contract also includes no health care cost increases for employees, workload reductions, job security and technology language that already exists in other casino markets, retirement increases, and more.
A tentative agreement had been reached on Friday, November 17, with Detroit’s three casinos following exactly one month of picketing in a fight for what labor organizers call the largest wage increase negotiated in the history of the city’s casino industry.
The Detroit Casino Council is made up of members of five unions: UNITE HERE Local 24, the United Auto Workers, Teamsters Local 1038, Operating Engineers Local 324, and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters.
