Plus, a new pop-up is headed to Batch Brewing — and more intel

A new general store with a bar and restaurant called Metropolitan Variety Store is now open. As Eater reported back in October, the spot located 8047 Agnes Street, had been in the works for a while. In November, Metropolitan Variety finally opened it’s doors, functioning as a three-for-one general store, restaurant, and bar.

The newly-opened spot in Detroit’s West Village takes over the former cocktail bar Craft Work. The menu is now live and highlights local Michigan produce with Latin American influences.

Currently on the menu are entrees such as a grilled pork collar with a celery-apple-tamarind glaze and plantains with rice, vegetable dishes like squash served with salsa macha and a cashew cream, as well as masa donuts or horchata panna cotta for dessert. On the drinks side, cocktails such as the Art In Motion with rum and a pineapple sunflower orgeat take the lead. Though walk-in space is available, reservations are encouraged. See inside the space.

Meanwhile, the store features bottles of wine, beer, and liquor, as well as donuts, cold brew, fresh soups by the pint, chocolate bars, ice cream, and dressing from Michigan and Trumbull, among other pantry selects. The restaurant and bar is open from Thursday through Monday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. The shop operates Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m.

Detroit has a new burger pop-up

According to a post on Instagram, the former Brooklyn Street Local’s co-founder Jason Yates, will be heading offsite to Batch Brewing with a new pop-up called Gravy/Burger. It will run Wednesdays, 4 p.m. 10 p.m. for the next couple of weeks at 1400 Porter Street.

Woodbridge Pub under new management, again

The neighborhood bar at 5169 Trumbull was first opened by developer Jim Geary in 2008. In 2018, it transitioned to new management, under the watch of local restaurant owners, Yanni Dionisopoulos and Spiro Vamvakas. After closing during the pandemic, Woodbridge Pub reopened in June 2020. However, now, Woodbridge Pub is relaunching again with a new menu and owners. It was unclear at the time of publishing who the new owners of Woodbridge are. Eater has reached out for comment. Earlier this month, the team posted on Instagram that the food on deck includes gochujang chicken wings, halal sandwiches, a spinach and artichoke dip, and more. On the weekends, the kitchen is open until 2 a.m.
