Calling All Plant Parents: Saffron De Twah Seeks Help Creating a Sustainable Oasis #DetroitFood
A Detroit restaurant owner is asking for donations of plants and clippings to grace a new patio
Saffron De Twah, Detroit’s award-winning modern Moroccan bistro, is reopening on November 4 with a newly designed patio. And to decorate that space, owner Omar Quais Anani is seeking the community’s help.
The four-season pergola that lines the east side restaurants is adorned with hanging basket lights, heaters, and a Moroccan plate design that will showcase a chef’s table. Owner Omar Quais Anani is calling on the community to donate plants and plant clippings to beautify the pergola of the restaurant, which has been closed since March 2020.
“What better way for our community to become part of the space, than to bring pieces of their lives into it,” says Anani. “Hence the propagation of plants. They grow, evolve, and split into new homes just like people.”
The idea is to make the diners on Gratiot feel as if they’re transported to a Saharan oasis. The call for greenery also embraces the core values of sustainability and community of Saffron De Twah, Eater Detroit’s 2019 restaurant of the year.
“I’ve always been a do-it-yourself restaurant owner without a massive budget,” says Anani. “I want the patio to feel like an oasis on the Sahara. If people want to call my part of town a food desert, then I’m going to provide the oasis inside it.”
Following the patio opening, reservations for dining in, holiday parties, and a VIP chef’s table experience will be available through the reservation system Tock.
