Prior to the pandemic, the Eater 38 was an attempt to answer the question, “Can you recommend a restaurant?” It was a curated list covering the entire metro Detroit area, spanning myriad cuisines and price points. While the premise behind the list remains intact, the ongoing health crisis has shifted priorities for restaurants now tackling the extraordinary service and financial challenges created by the health crisis. Clever solutions for providing hospitality abound in the Detroit area. Restaurants establishing in-house delivery services, installing takeout windows, and expanding into online ordering.

With all these factors in mind, the Eater 38 has been updated for the first time since the pandemic began and includes longtime Detroit staples, restaurants with loyal followings, and those really stepping up to the challenges of serving during a health crisis. More than a dozen restaurants have been added to not only reflect the changes the pandemic has created, but to properly reflect the diversity of Detroit’s dining scene. All of the restaurants included offer customers some form of carryout, curbside pickup, or delivery option. Removal from the Eater 38 does not mean a restaurant isn’t still great and won’t return in the future, but allows for new additions, keeping the 38 a fresh, inclusive, and representative list.

Above all, remember that no matter how normal it may feel to go out and eat again, dining right now is not the same. Takeout is generally considered by health experts to be lower-risk than in-person service, and drinking can lower people’s inhibitions, so be careful. Whenever possible (or required) it’s essential that customers wear a mask and wash their hands regularly. This is a tough time for the restaurant industry and its staff, too, so please, if you do choose to grab a bite, be kind and remember to tip well — even if you’re doing to-go drinks.

A number of metro Detroit restaurants have resumed dine-in service. The level of service offered is indicated on each map point. However, this should not be taken as endorsement for dining in, as there are still safety concerns: For updated information on coronavirus cases in your area, please visit the state of Michigan’s coronavirus tracker. Studies indicate that there is a lower exposure risk when outdoors, but the level of risk involved with patio dining is contingent on restaurants following strict social distancing and other safety guidelines.
