While the coronavirus pandemic continues to drastically impact lives and businesses, restaurants have had to find new ways to adapt like expanding carryout menus, reconfiguring dining rooms while expanding patios, and providing cocktails to-go. Despite all the uncertainty of ever-evolving conditions, several Ann Arbor restaurants have opened and even found ways to thrive.

Below is a guide to exciting new establishments that have opened in 2020. The list includes chef Josh Wetshtein’s Of Rice and Men, Bao Boys’ food truck, and Lala’s — a revamp of the former Standard Bistro & Larder. Over in Ypsilanti, Bellflower is offering Southern-influence cuisine and Wax Bar lets music lovers enjoy tropical cocktails while perusing used vinyl.

Above all, remember that no matter how normal it may feel to go out and eat again, dining right now is not the same. Takeout or outdoor dining are generally considered by health experts to be lower-risk options and whenever possible (or required) its essential that customers wear a mask and wash their hands regularly. This is a tough time for the restaurant industry and its staff, too, so please, if you do choose to grab a bite, be kind and remember to tip well.

Many Ann Arbor restaurants have resumed dine-in service. The level of service offered is indicated on each map point. However, this should not be taken as endorsement for dining in, as there are still safety concerns: For updated information on coronavirus cases in your area, please visit the state of Michigan’s coronavirus tracker. Studies indicate that there is a lower exposure risk when outdoors, but the level of risk involved with patio dining is contingent on restaurants following strict social distancing and other safety guidelines.
