Chefs Depart From Acclaimed Seafood Spot Voyager in Ferndale #DetroitFood
The restaurant plans to introduce more casual options to the menu like British-style fish and chips and spicy fried chicken sandwiches
Popular Ferndale seafood restaurant Voyager, like so many restaurants around the world, has undergone several big transitions during the pandemic including switching to carryout and grocery service. Now, as the restaurant reopens for patio-only service, it’s undergoing a change in the kitchen: Chefs Jennifer Jackson and Justin Tootla departed from the restaurant in June after more than three years collaborating at the nationally-acclaimed neighborhood restaurant.
Tootla and Jackson had helped Eli Boyer open downtown Detroit burger spot Lovers Only, but later stepped away from the restaurant to focus on Voyager and their forthcoming restaurant. The pair are expected to be announcing a new project soon.
Justin Fulton, previously of Pernoi, is taking over in a consulting chef role, per a release. Under his direction, the restaurant will be adjusting its menu toward more casual dining with options like British-style fish and chips, Maine mussels with heirloom beans, Connecticut lobster rolls, and spicy fried chicken sandwiches.
In addition to the patio-only, socially distanced seating, the restaurant is continuing to offer its carryout “dockside” menu and introducing new bottled to-go cocktail options to the mix. Customers can expect options like Mai Tais and whiskey smashes among the options.
