A Guide to Detroit Restaurants Offering Carryout or Patio-Only Seating During the Partial Reopening #DetroitFood

Restaurants that are open for service with outdoor dining and takeout only

As of Monday, June 8, restaurants and bars in Michigan are now allowed to open their dining rooms at 50 percent capacity with six feet of social distancing between tables. Many businesses have opted to take advantage of this loosening of restrictions and are inviting customers back indoors with added safety precautions ranging from plexiglass dividers to disposable utensils.

Other restaurants are taking a more cautious approach. Ones that may have closed entirely during the pandemic are just now reopening as takeout-only or patio seating-only restaurants due to the physical space constraints of their indoor seating areas and, in some cases, in order to limit prolonged staff contact with customers who can’t use masks while eating and drinking in enclosed spaces.

Based on data from a diner survey conducted prior to the wider reopening of restaurants in Michigan, Eater Detroit is aware that many customers are choosing to avoid indoor dining or continuing to order carryout and delivery. Some individuals may be opting to avoid restaurants that have reopened dining rooms to reduce contact with others when picking up their meals. Below, Eater Detroit has compiled a list of the restaurants that are currently only offering outdoor service or are choosing to stick to takeout-only menus for now.

There is always going to be risk with going out in public during the pandemic, particularly if you’re around others who aren’t wearing masks or following social distancing rules. However, there are things one can do to reduce those risks and support local restaurants in the process. If you choose to go out to eat or to retrieve a takeout order, remember to tip well and follow the rules set out by restaurants. No one should have to tell you to wear a mask.
