Eastern Market Brewing Company’s Ferndale Branch Is Now Pouring Coffee on Weekends #DetroitFood

The brewery is still waiting on licensing for the Ferndale Project

The team behind Eastern Market Brewing Co. just took its first steps towards opening its forthcoming Ferndale branch. The so-called Ferndale Project, located inside the former Livernois Tap building, began hosting a weekends-only coffee pop-up on December 29.

EMBC confirmed plans to expand to the Livernois beer hall space in September and is still awaiting a final licensing transfers before it can start serving beer, co-owner Dayne Bartscht tells Eater in an email. However, they haven’t lost time activating the space, teaming up with Detroit-based Ashe Supply Company to host an espresso bar Friday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The taproom was recently outfitted with free WiFi and lots of outlets for leisurely internet browsing with a latte.

Beginning in the next few weeks, chef Garrett McDonald is expected to begin serving lunch on Fridays out of the building’s kitchen. EMBC hopes to finalize its licensing at the site and begin serving beer and cider by the end of the winter.

This is just the latest in a trend of combination coffee shops and breweries in Detroit. Last fall, Woodward Avenue Brewers opened a cafe called the Alechemy Room. Likewise, Flint’s Tenacity Brewing is in the process of opening a taproom and coffee roastery in Virginia Park this year.
