From frothy cups topped with flavored marshmallows to single-origin, spiced cocoa with chocolate bitters

Michiganders are made of tougher stuff than most, but it's difficult to resist the call of indoor heating and a warm beverage. Instead of hiding from the cold, melt away that winter chill with the the ultimate liquid dessert — hot chocolate.

Most cafes offer this cold weather standard-bearer on menus. It's kid-friendly and easy to make so long as cocoa or chocolate syrup is on hand. But some spots are taking the beverage beyond the typical bounds by incorporating handmade chocolates, fancy marshmallows, and even a little booze to the brew. Below, find seven excellent mugs of cocoa ranging from the Garrido’s towering spectacles of chocolate bliss to New Order’s mochas and cocoas topped with flavored marshmallows. Try them all this season, and don't skimp on the whipped cream.
