Critic: La Rondinella Delivers ‘Knockout’ Chicken Entree

Mark Kurlyandchik follows up on La Rondinella in Eastern Market with a proper review: "Dave Mancini's new Eastern Market Italian joint punches well above its weight class, offering thoughtful Northern Italian-style fare for Olive Garden prices," the critic reports. The menu currently delivers two "knockouts" — the calamari ripieni (stuffed squid) and pollo agrodolce, a chicken entree "worthy of four stars." Kurlyandchik writes that "the dish is an example of the elegant simplicity of rustic Italian cuisine done right." [Freep]

Serena Maria Daniels chows down at Rosa Mexicana in Lincoln Park: Chef Neftali Ayala draws on his heritage, delivering "a menu that demonstrates both gourmet Italian techniques and several Mexican staples — all beautifully plated, solid in execution, and easy on the pocketbook." Daniels notes that on her visit "several menu items were out of stock." The mole "hit both the sweet and picante notes and, when coupled with succulent boneless chicken breast, was quite satisfying." Molly Abraham samples dishes with a view at Mike’s on the Water: The St. Clair Shores-based eatery isn’t the "biggest or flashiest" on The Nautical Mile, "but it’s a place people look forward to every spring." Abraham writes that Mike Lefevre’s restaurant goes a step beyond the average, "from the seasonal approach to the menu that features an array of well-prepared fish and seafood to the friendly service and the bar with a wine list that features labels with a water theme." Over the last three years the restaurant has served 15,110 "lemon-sparked" lobster rolls. Two and a half stars. [Detroit News]
