Where to Eat and Drink in Buzzy Oak Park #DetroitFood
Once considered the largest dry city in Michigan, this inner ring suburb has redefined its food and drink scene with the addition of scratch bakeries and pubs
Look at Oak Park trying to be cute. It’s working. A decade ago this May, voters of this inner ring suburb elected to reverse the city’s longstanding ban on the sale of alcohol and mixed spirits, resulting in a wave of new bars and restaurants. Today, Oak Park is home to a growing number of spots where one can enjoy a pint of beer at one of the city’s two breweries or meet up with friends for cocktails and a bite — all without having to leave the neighborhood, casual occasions that were unheard of here for decades.
This influx of bars, restaurants, and cafes complement some of the beloved eateries that have been around (sans booze) since long before the ban was lifted. Now, Oak Park residents and visitors from surrounding cities can enjoy a range of options. Swing by a beloved takeout-friendly pita shop or grab lunch from the area’s newer gastropub. Bring the kiddos or your pooch to a spacious bar with board games that welcomes customers to order a pizza from one of its neighbors. Or marvel at the exquisite pastries coming out of a jewel box-sized bakery. Here are some of the restaurants, bars, and cafes helping to redefine the city from a sleepy suburb to a family-friendly destination for food and drink.
