Former Franklin Grill to Be Transformed Into a Charming Oyster House #DetroitFood

The carriage house is being renovated to gear up for a late 2024 opening

The former Franklin Grill, which shuttered at the start of 2024 after a 16-year run, is being reimagined. Detroit businessman and managing partner of Ronin Capital Partners, Jay Farner, is in the process of transforming the space at 32760 Franklin Road into the Franklin Oyster Bar & Eatery.

The Franklin Oyster Bar & Eatery, or the Franklin, is aiming to open by the end of the year. In addition to acquiring the former Franklin Grill site, Farner has also purchased the adjoining property at 32750 Franklin, which will be joined to the new restaurant by a shared back patio. The neighboring site will become an as-of-yet unnamed cafe where visitors can pick up grab-and-go sandwiches, flatbreads, salads, pastries, and coffee.

According to a media release, the Franklin Oyster Bar & Eatery is an homage to the oyster suppers that were common among early settlers of the village. held. Early settlers of Franklin came mostly from New England, where oysters are plentiful. By the mid 19th century, shucked oysters were packed in ice and shipped to Detroit by rail or steamboat to satisfy local cravings.

Helming the kitchen is executive chef Nick Geftos, who also heads the kitchen at BESA Detroit downtown, also owned by Ronin Capital Partners. The cafe will be led by pastry chef Christine Anschuetz.

Farner purchased the property around the beginning of the year following the January closure of Franklin Grill, which according to the Detroit News, had been in operation for 16 years.
