Just in time for Flower Day and a summer full of food-related activities, here’s your guide to enjoying the iconic market

Eastern Market is Detroit’s quintessential food hub, where each weekend, tens of thousands of metro Detroiters make their way to its iconic sheds for all manner of produce, prepared foods, meat processors, garden starters, and every May, Flower Day. This year, Flower Day falls on Sunday, May 19 and features vendors from all over the Midwest. In addition to the big day of festivities, shoppers can potentially avoid the crowds by visiting the market for their floral needs each Tuesday through the month of May between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Sheds 5 and 6, as well as on Sundays from sunrise to sunset from Mother’s Day, May 12, to Father’s Day, June 16.

The coming weeks and months at the district are packed with events, including Little Asian Bites’ third Night Market (this time, it’ll be held in the evening) on May 16, Spring Veg Fest on June 2, the Detroit Festival of Books on July 21, with Eastern Market After Dark wrapping up the summer season on September 19. There’s always also plenty of movement in the district’s restaurant scene. Over the past several months, the area has welcomed a number of newer establishments, including the casual walk-up diner and cafe Mitsos Greek Food & Coffee, while market stalwart Supino Pizzeria has reemerged from a fire and is again slinging takeout slices and pies to hungry shoppers. Meanwhile, keep your eyes peeled for Baobab Fare’s bright yellow food truck business, Waka, which will be making monthly Saturday appearances through the end of the year, offering its menu of traditional Burundian chapatis and other street snacks. With the warmth of summer on the horizon, now’s the time to revisit the food and drink spots that define Eastern Market.
