Plus, Fatima’s Grill is relocating from Dearborn after just a few months in business

Hazel Park’s beloved tasting menu spot Mabel Gray is ringing in the new year with plans to build out its patio into a permanent addition, giving diners a little more legroom to enjoy their experience. According to a social media post published this week, the space will be “reminiscent of the wine caves of old Europe,” that will also give sommelier Paulina Schemanski room to host special events. Mabel Gray is closed for a winter break through January 8. Upon reopening, customers should be advised that parking may be a bit of an issue temporarily while construction takes place.

Fatima’s Grill is moving

Los Angeles County Lebanese Mexican sensation Fatima’s Grill made its Michigan debut in fall 2023 in Dearborn, but in just a few short months, the spot is gearing up to relocate. According to a social media post published earlier this week, the all-halal eatery will reopen in February, to be situated at 27430 5 Mile Road in Livonia. Details for the move were not immediately available, but within the post, the ownership simply said the Dearborn location did not work out.

News that the wildly popular chain famous for its Flamin’ Hot Cheetos-laced asada fries, halal shawarma platters, and birria crunchwraps would expand to metro Detroit came in November 2022. At the time, owner Ali Elreda told Eater Detroit that he wanted to expand to the southeast Michigan market, in part, to appeal to the sizable Muslim community in the region that adhere to eating only food that is considered halal. Since that announcement, Fatima’s Grill has added franchise locations in the Ditmas Park section of Brooklyn, Denton, Texas, and have shared that a location is also supposed to open soon in Cleveland, Ohio.

Fatima’s Grill swung open its doors in 2016 in the southeast Los Angeles County city of Downey to much appreciation for its Instagram-worthy Mexican Lebanese fusion of snacks and entrees. Additional locations are spread across Southern California and in December Elreda told CNBC that he’s working to open more spots throughout the United States and Canada. Elreda was born in Detroit, but his family relocated to the Los Angeles area when he was 5 years old. Elreda completed a six-year prison sentence in 2013. During his incarceration in 2012, he developed a recipe for a hot sauce, which served as the basis for a line of bottled hot sauces called Lebamex that is available for sale online. The sauce is also available at Super Greenland Market and Hashems Roastery & Meat Market.
