The popular Mexican food spot will sell its beloved tacos and chicken and continue rebuilding efforts

Taqueria El Rey, the popular Mexican restaurant in Southwest Detroit that was devastated by a fire last month, will reemerge next month when operators take residency at Batch Brewing Company in Corktown.

Starting March 1, the chefs from Taqueria El Rey will prepare the eatery’s beloved tacos, char-grilled chicken, and ribs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. or until supplies run out every Monday and Tuesday. The collaboration will allow the operators to continue bringing in income as they figure out next steps for reopening the establishment.

According to a press release, Batch Brewing’s owner Stephen Roginson stepped in to offer his kitchen to the Taqueria El Rey team, just the latest example of the ways that the brewery has reached out to restaurants impacted by crises. When Michael Symon’s Roast closed abruptly in January, Roginson turned over his planned birthday event to hold a one-night fundraiser featuring the stalwart restaurant’s famous burgers.

“We’re all in this together,” said Roginson in a statement. “We need to step up for our community. Eliseo Fuentes and his family have been anchors in the Southwest community for so long, they deserve our support now. At Batch Brewing Company, we’re working to be more than just a brewery. We want to be a community resource. The last two years have been incredibly hard on the restaurant industry and if we’ve learned anything, it’s to stick together.”

The fire at Taqueria El Rey took place the morning of Jan. 29 in the restaurant’s grill shack. No one was injured but Daniel Fuentes, a manager and the son of owner Eliseo Fuentes, said at the time that it was going to be difficult to rebuild after the blaze destroyed much of the interior.

In the days after the fire, Fuentes’ cousin launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money so the family could make necessary repairs. The fundraiser went on to raise more than $33,000.
