Detroit Piston Cade Cunningham Teams Up Again With Corktown Cafe on Vegan Sandwich #DetroitFood
Folk’s sandwich rollout marks the NBA rookie’s season opener
Detroit Piston Cade Cunningham is collaborating on a second sandwich with Detroit’s Folk Detroit cafe, just in time for the NBA team’s season opener.
The six-foot-eight, 220-pound first-round draft pick, an ambassador for JUST Egg’s mung bean-based plant-based egg, partnered with Folk on a sandwich using the JUST Egg Folded in August 2021.
“The Cade Stack” version 2.0 is layered with JUST Egg Folded, curried vegan sausage, pickled red onion, apple chutney, and cilantro on Zingerman’s farm bread. The hearty hero will be $10 and is a new take on the original sandwich that launched in August. The partnership also ups the ante by donating both a portion of the sandwich proceeds and a match from JUST Egg to the Detroit Food Academy. It’s available starting Wednesday, October 20, the same day as the season opener, for three weeks.
The point guard told the ESPN broadcast crew that he went vegan in high school to experiment with how changing his diet would affect his performance. The results inspired him to make the change permanent, he says.
“I think, bigger than anything, I just wanted to try something new for my body and see how my body reacted to it,” he says. “So, once I tried it, I did it for two weeks,” Cunningham says, explaining how he ate at McDonald’s during the 2019 FIBA World Cup and then realized he couldn’t eat animal products again. “We weren’t accustomed to the food that we had out there. So, I started back eating burgers and things, [but] on that trip, I told myself, ‘I’m going back to vegan, and I’m sticking to it.’”
Folk, a gourmet market and cafe known for its breakfast and brunch plates, is at 1701 Trumbull in Corktown.
