Less than a week after issuing an executive order to close all restaurants and bars for dine-in service, Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer announced on Saturday, March 21 that the shutdown will continue through April 13. The news comes as new coronavirus cases have climbed in Michigan to more than 1,000. The shutdown was initially expected to expire on March 30. Some are anticipating that Whitmer will issue a shelter in place order at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 23, similar to orders in California, Ohio, New York, and Illinois.

Bedrock offers small businesses rent relief

Bedrock Real Estate, landlord to a large swath of downtown Detroit businesses, is waiving rent, maintenance, and parking fees for all restaurant and retail tenants “that qualify as ‘small businesses’ for the months of April, May, and June,” per a release. The Detroit Free Press reports that tenants with “under $100 million in annual sales can qualify for two months,” while businesses earning “$80,000 or less in monthly sales” will qualify for three months of relief.

City of Detroit partners with Forgotten Harvest for food rescue

Food rescue organization Forgotten Harvest has partnered with the City of Detroit to help restaurants redirect their unused food to people in need. Businesses can sign up through a centralized online form.

Statewide map identifies meal pick up locations amid novel coronavirus school closings

The Michigan Department of Education released a map last week identifying locations across the state where families can receive meals during school closures, according to Tostada Magazine. The program provides up to two meals per day for kids up to 18 years old.
