Where to Find Hidden Bars and Speakeasies in Detroit #DetroitFood

A cocktail bar filled with hexagon shaped lighting, hexagon tables, and a big backlit bar. Bad Luck. | Michelle and Chris Gerard

Back alley bars, Prohibition-era watering holes, and classic cocktails

Hiding booze is a homegrown tradition in Detroit. Prohibition started here two years before the rest of the country, and, thanks to its proximity to Canada, Detroit was a hotbed for smuggling illicit hooch to a parched nation. It’s thought that thousands of blind pigs and speakeasies sprinkled the city during those dry years. These days, customers can still find a handful of pre-Prohibition bars serving stiff drinks around town and a new guard has cropped up serving classic recipes in unexpected locations.
