It’s graduation month. Across Michigan, tens of thousands of seniors will walk across the stage and get their hard-earned diplomas. Many of them are tomorrow’s leaders – some here in Michigan, others on the world stage.
Comcast NBCUniversal recognized 108 of them with a total of $114,000 in scholarships as part of its annual Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program. Funded by the Comcast Foundation, it is is a one-time, $1,000 scholarship awarded to the best and brightest high school seniors for their exceptional community service, academic performance and leadership skills.
Fifty-six of the winners are from the metro Detroit area and 19 are from Detroit. That is slightly more than half of all the Leaders and Achievers scholarships awarded in Michigan. Our congratulations to them.
Jamilla Essak, a resident of Sterling Heights and student at Regina High School, was selected to receive an additional $6,000 Comcast Founders Scholarship. That award was named in honor of Ralph J. Roberts, founder and chairman emeritus of Comcast Corporation.

Since 2001, more than $25 million has been awarded to nearly 25,000 high school seniors across the country as part of the company’s Leaders and Achievers Program.
The program provides scholarships to students who strive to achieve their full potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools and who serve as models for their fellow students. It aims to give young people various opportunities to prepare for the future and to inspire them to become more engaged in their communities as well as demonstrate the importance of civic involvement and its value within the business community.
