Just Detroit News | Detroit’s best communicators to be honored by Association of Women in Communications #Detroit #JustDetroit
From a social media neighborhood campaign to an entrepreneur who has improved the livelihood of homeless women, all communications things Detroit will be celebrated at the annual Matrix banquet of the Association of Women in Communications. The ceremony is Thursday, May 19 at 5:30 p.m. at the Detroit Golf Club in Palmer Park.
“We’re celebrating the power and strength of effective communications and the rebound of Detroit,” says Deniela Ortiz-Lalain, president of the Detroit Chapter.
The keynote speaker will be Mary Kramer, publisher of Crain’s Detroit Business. The publication’s Detroit Homecoming drew more than 300 expats to the city over the past two years and sparked more than $230 million in pending investments.
Three individuals will be honored by the organization.
Veronika Scott
The Diamond Award, recognizing an individual who has improved workplace conditions for women, goes to Veronika Scott, founder of “The Empowerment Plan.” She hires previously homeless women to sew sleeping coats for those still living on Detroit streets.
Alexis Wiley
The Vanguard Award, recognizing an innovative communications campaign goes to Mayor Duggan’s chief of staff, Alexis Wiley, for developing “Dream It. Do It. Detroit.,” a multimedia platform using print, digital and social media to call attention to Detroit small businesses and neighborhoods. Members of Challenge Detroit helped make it possible.
Karen Spica
The Headliner Award, recognizing an outstanding member of the AWC chapter, goes to Karen Stewart Spica, APR, who currently is part of the revitalization effort in East Dearborn, and was a leading communicator for Allstate Insurance, Lear Corp., and the FCA Group.
The Detroit chapter of Women in Communications began in 1938 to provide a forum among professionals across all communications disciplines.
