The fight for votes in the swing state of Michigan is playing out in Detroit-area restaurants, with candidates making last-minute pleas to voters pick a side. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have made several stops throughout the Mitten State in recent weeks, hoping to lock in the final undecided votes ahead of Tuesday’s historic election.
Harris Campaign Stops at Kuzzo’s Chicken & Waffles and Trak Houz Bar and Grill
On Sunday, November 3, Harris shook hands and took selfies with customers at Kuzzo’s Chicken & Waffles on the Avenue of Fashion, while on Saturday, October 26, she greeted supporters at Kalamazoo’s Trak Houz Bar and Grill, according to MLive. In its close to nine years in operation, Kuzzo’s has become a popular destination for politicians on the campaign trail. In 2016, then-candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton ate at the restaurant while Mayor Mike Duggan and former HUD Secretary Julian Castro paid the spot a visit in 2015. During her appearance in Kalamazoo, Harris shared beers with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and was reportedly caught on a hot mic telling Big Gretch that her campaign needed to move ground among male voters.
Trump Visits Dearborn’s the Great Commoner
Meanwhile in Dearborn, home to the largest Arab American community in the United States, Trump visited with voters at the popular brunch eatery the Great Commoner on Friday, November 1. More than 100,000 Arab Americans voted uncommitted in the August Primary in light of President Joe Biden’s support of Israel amid ongoing violence in Gaza and Lebanon, calling into question the traditionally Democratic leaning community. According to the BBC, Trump secured two endorsements from the mayors of both Dearborn Heights and Hamtramck, while Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud blasted the former president on Friday in response to his appearance. “The architect of the Muslim Ban is making a campaign stop in Dearborn. People in this community know what Trump stands for — we suffered through it for years. I’ve refused to sit down with him although the requests keep coming in,” said Hammoud, according to Fox 2 Detroit.
